October 2016: KTL Install Catenary System above the M1 Motorway to facilitate stringing works on the Tamnamore-Gort-Omagh 110kV Network

KTL have successfully erected a Catenary System to facilitate the stringing of new Zabra, Horse and OPGW Conductor on new infrastructure over the M1 motorway at Dungannon in Northern Ireland. The stringing section is 2219m long consisting of 9 Angle masts and 6 polesets.

The aerial catenary support system is intended to safely cradle the conductors during the installation by tension stringing. The system is required due to the fact that there is a road crossing within the span, with live traffic and it would not be feasible to stop or close the road for lengthy periods of time In order to install the catenary system a closure of the M1 was required during off peak hours between the Tamnamore Junction 14 and the Dungannon Junction 15.

The total span of the catenary system was 220m which consisted of two spans (146m & 74m) between a temporary stayed Poleset made of two 24m stout poles and 110KV portal crossarm, A Tower type SF60 30-60 E6 (17.75m) and a stayed Poleset made of two 20m stout poles After the conductor install, the new conductor takes the weight of the entire catenary system. At this time the catenary system can be retrieved without the requirement of a road closure.
