Italy Republic Day with Christian D’Agostino

Italy Republic Day or Festa Della Repubblica is a national holiday on June 2nd, 2022. It celebrates the day Italians voted to abolish the monarchy in 1946 to become a republic. Official ceremonies are held all over the country with military parades being the main event on this day. Celebrations usually start with the laying of a ceremonial wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Altare Della Patria, a towering white marble monument in Rome, that symbolises Italian freedom.

Tell us about Italy Republic Day?

A celebration of the Italian Republic after World War II, where the Italian dictatorship fell, and people voted in a referendum to become a republic.

How will you celebrate this national holiday?

Italian celebrations for this day are all about family, friends, and food! People generally celebrate the day with fireworks and picnics in Italy. As I am now living in the UK, I will save the celebrations for the weekend with friends.

Do you have a tradition about the day you would like to share?

In Rome, on this day military jets fly above the city and Italian people get together and remember to be a whole nation, similar to what happens during football championships.

What is it about Italy that most people wouldn’t know?

1. “Chicken with pasta, or rice – this combination is only on the menu when you feel sick or are in hospital. I cannot believe people pay for eating it at a restaurant!”

2. “In Italy nobody asks you to spell words, you read how you speak and speak how you read.”
