KTL Training Courses November 2023

During the UMLAUT network freeze, we took advantage of the open days to conduct three impactful training courses for our #KTL teams at our newly established UK office.

The courses offered insights and practical knowledge to enhance the skills of our teams in crucial areas. These included the two-day USP Cable Detection and Avoidance course, the one-day CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS), and Vodafone's Electrical Contractor Induction Course.

David Bromley Walsh, KTL SHEQ Director commented, “We had a diverse group attend these courses. Our objective was to enhance the capabilities of our field teams and to upskill those responsible for planning and overseeing the work. The USP Competency Framework developed by Dave McPherson was set up to protect people from harm, and prevent damage to Underground Services while supporting everybody to enable them to do their job safely and effectively. CSTA Global, delivered this training. They are specialists in all aspects of underground service protection and accredited by Pro Qual, ROSPA, EUSR, British Safety Council and CITB.

For CITB SEATS, we at KTL are very aware of our environmental responsibilities and this course will help us to conduct more effective audits and provide informed guidance to our on-site teams.

Positive feedback was received from all attendees. There were valuable key learnings taken away to be implemented.

Dom Mackinnon, Technical Manager delivered training on DC power, supporting the team by undertaking Vodafone's Electrical Contractor Induction Course. The course was attended by Persons in Charge of Work and Site Supervisors. The training sessions focussed on educating staff, on the most recent industry changes, covering DC competency awareness and the changes impacting landlords and operators.

All attendees successfully received their accreditation for this course, and #KTL is committed to fully supporting engineers in their individual progression, especially those seeking to enhance their competency levels with DC qualifications.”

USP Cable Detection and Avoidance Course

It was delivered by Dave McPherson, the founder of the USP Competency Framework, he said, “It is about supporting everybody to enable them to do their job safely and effectively. We have a panel of the UK’s leading experts in their fields with everything from human factors specialists in the aviation industry, to regulatory specialists, to skilled surveyors and even leading equipment manufacturers.

What we’re doing is bringing everybody together to have a linked-up conversation about how we can improve as an industry, and how can we remove a lack of competency as one of the causes for service strikes and service damage. #KTL were chosen to take part in the trial of the framework, which demonstrates our commitment to conducting safe excavations and improving the competency of our workforce.”

Feedback received, “The quality of the training is far more than other utility avoidance courses I have attended. I left feeling confident that I could examine documentation and use the CAT and Genny with a reasonable expectation of identifying and locating services within that area.”

CITB Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS)

This course was delivered by CSTA Global, CICES training partner with Blue Hat training. They are specialists in all aspects of underground service protection and accredited by Pro Qual, ROSPA, EUSR, British Safety Council and CITB.

This one-day interactive course was to upskill our site supervisors/managers with the aim of providing them with an introduction to environmental issues on #KTL sites. It brought attendees up to date with environmental and sustainability knowledge. It provided them with a thorough overview of the subject, relevant legislation, and industry best practice.

Vodafone’s Electrical Contractor Induction Course

This course was attended by Persons in Charge of Work and Site Supervisors. Domnic Mackinnon delivered the course highlighting and educating staff on the most recent industry changes, covering DC competency awareness and the changes impacting landlords and operators.
