Portugal Day

Nelson Coelho, an OTD Manager at KTL, is proudly celebrating Portugal Day on the 10th June. "Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas", otherwise known as the 'Day of Portugal, Camões, and the Portuguese Communities' is a remembrance day for Luís de Camões, who is considered Portugal's greatest national icon. de Camões is best known for his poem narrating Portugal's expeditions in the 15th Century, with his official date of death on June 10th, 1850. Portugal Day has been an annual celebration each year since its inauguration, with the mere exception being during a military coup in 1974, which deposed Estado Novo's government.[1]

Portugal serves among the eldest nations in both Europe and the world, with the capital city, Lisbon, being four centuries older than Rome. King Afonso Henriques was formally appointed as the ruling monarch in 1139, in the same year that the borders of the nation were officially established. Portugal regularly places highly on the Global Peace Index (GPI), making it among one of the safest and most peaceful countries in the world.

Portuguese is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with in excess of 250 million speakers throughout the globe. This is the official language in nine countries, which include Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola and Mozambique.[2]

Mr. Coelho, in his role as an OTD Manager, said that he appreciates working within a multicultural team on a daily basis in KTL. In his view, in addition to being “an amazing company to work with”, is a “big school” which provides multiple training opportunities to continually upskill and improve capabilities.

Nelson, said he is currently working and living in the UK, and although he won’t be in Portugal to celebrate this year, he intends to enjoy this national holiday with his family and friends eating and drinking!
