World Suicide Prevention Day
One in every 100 deaths worldwide is because of suicide. The impact of suicide can be devastating for all involved. It has unfortunately affected either you or someone close to you. By raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding suicide we can all help reduce the number of suicides around the world.
On September 10th the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) are creating hope through action by holding worldwide events to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to raise important awareness and promote action that can help save lives and save those affected from debilitating heartbreak.
The IASP have released some harrowing global suicide statistics which are as follows:
· An estimated 703,000 people die by suicide worldwide each year.
· Over one in every 100 deaths (1.3%) in 2019 were the result of suicide.
· The global suicide rate is over twice as high among men than woman.
· Over half (58%) of all deaths by suicide occur before the age of 50.
· Suicide occurs across all regions in the world, however, over three quarters (77%) of suicides in 2019 occurred in low and middle income countries.
· An individual suffering from depression is 20 times more likely to die by suicide than someone without the disorder.
This World Suicide Prevention Day we can all make a difference by taking the time to reach out to someone in your community. By showing a family member, a friend or even a stranger that you care can create hope in somebody who has been struggling silently. There are many resources available to help those who wish to help others who they think may be at risk of suicide. Those resources include:
